What Is a Handyman and What Can They Do?A handyman is a skilled professional who is able to work on a myriad of projects primarily related to a home or commercial building. Generally speaking a professional full service handyman company can work on any project that does not require ground up construction or reconstruction of a building. They can complete small jobs with one kind of subcontractor like drywall installation or large complex jobs with several different kinds of subcontractors like bathroom remodeling. The idea of jack-of-all trades is a very good nexus for the term 'handyman', though it does carry with it connotations of 'master of none' implying shoddy incomplete workmanship. This is not the case with truly comprehensive handyman services. Though a handyman is typically not a master in a specific trade (though some are masters in a specific trade) they are master's in flexibility, adaptability and versatility. Where an electrician, plumber may only see a project through their on particular trade, a handyman is able to take a more wholistic approach to a project and keep the big picture in mind. Because a handyman is able to keep the big picture in mind, they are often called general contractors or home renovation contractors. The major difference between a handyman and a general contractor is the ability to add square footage, that is make changes to the structure of a building. When that's the case, often specific licenses and permits are required. It's best to check with handyman services company to see if they can handle a job like that.
Handyman services can be summarized in primarily three groups: maintenance, like power washing and gutter service, renovation like basement remodels, repairs and installation like attic insulation, installations, and for lack of a better term 'honey-do' items the need to be done around a house like furniture assembly, tv mounting, appliance set up, bathtub reglazing and other minor things that many just don't have time to get to. Take a typical bathroom remodel for example. A handyman is the perfect professional to handle such a multifaceted undertaking. First the demolition has to happen. Flooring, fixtures and tile have to be removed. Care has to be taken not to damage plumbing and electrical systems. The water supply to toilet, shower, sink and tub have to be shut off. Next the toilet has to be carefully removed. Following that the plumbing to the sink has to be disconnected then the vanity removed. The shower and tub have to be inspected for mildew, mold and water damage, baseboards and trim have to come off at this point as well. Electricity to the bathroom should be turned off and the lights removed if lighting fixtures will be replaced. Anything on the walls like hooks and racks should then be removed. Finally any drywall or tile then tile, linoleum flooring should come up. At this point the subfloor will be exposed and should be checked for any water or mold damage. With the full volume of the room uncovered the plumbing has to be prepared for the fixtures to be installed; this requires a new toilet flange, tub or shower pan, controls for the shower. Any changes to plumbing that have to happened should be assessed at at this point too, for example in cases where more connections are needed for the new vanity. With the drywall or tile off of the wall, new outlets can be installed along with any new hookups for ceiling lights or lighting about a tub or shower. If wiring needs to be upgraded this would be the time to do. Replacing ungrounded outlets with grounded outlets with a GFI or GFI outlets would happen at this point too. With the walls exposed, adding grab bars would happen next if they are to be installed. Finally walls are sealed by hanging drywall or cement board (which water resistant), then the walls are painted and tile is installed where need. Final touches like installing a shower door, lights, an exhaust fan, a vanity and sink, toiled and accessories like racks and hooks are installed. All of the aspects of the above outlined bathroom remodel can be completed by a licensed experienced full service handyman services company. It is important to note that in some instances a the person completing any electrical or plumbing work will need to be licensed. But other than that caveat a handyman services company can complete remodels and renovations without issue. |
